WHAT THE WEALTHY UNDERSTAND ABOUT INCOME THAT THE POOR DON'T - PT2 ...By Oluwatosin Samuels

In the preceding episode, I started to share on what the wealthy understand about income that the poor don't and we shall continue in that line of thought this week. Remember as I've said that being wealthy or poor in this context is not a function of what you currently possess materially but how responsive your mind is to creating advantage out of limited or unavailable resources. I'll ask two questions at this point:

1. If you lose all you currently have (in assets and reserve fund) today, how would you approach things and how soon can you get back up?

2. For those who do not have as much assets or financial resources at the moment: if you are given a target to deliberately build your financial or social wealth for a particular time frame, how would you go about it? And how long would it take you?

The practical answer you provide to the above question(s) is a litmus test to how wealthy you are and have become.

Back to the story of Dekunle and Debola, both couldn't reach a compromise to execute Debola's proposition that they should team up to build a pipeline rather than going back and forth to fetch water in a bucket. Dekunle couldn't just fathom it, what he's known how to do all his life is to "bucket-fetch" and he's mastered the art so much that he has become one of the best things to happen to the fetching industry...lol. After his conversation, a fresh idea came to him as well. Dekunle went to the market and bought some bigger containers that could hold more water. Fulfilled with his achievement, he resumed work again, now fetching more water and of course that means more income. Promotion isn't it?

Quietly, Debola did his calculations, perfected his plans and started digging alone on his mission to building a pipeline. He worked day and night. With the little savings he had, he bought the little materials he needed for the project and hired professionals to complement his expertise. By now Dekunle has started earning both himself and Debola's pay since he alone is delivering the job and his friend has gone "wasting" away his time over an impossible project. On every occasion when he's returning from the water place, Dekunle would shake his head at his friend Debola for being so time wasteful. On other days, he would laugh him to scorn.

After few months, Debola completed his pipeline project and the joy he had to see water flow from the water outlets he created gave him so much joy. He invited all the nobles in his community to the launch and even dignitaries from surrounding communities. Of course, he handed a special invite to Dekunle as well. Everyone honored the invitation including his friend but...
