WHAT THE WEALTHY UNDERSTAND ABOUT INCOME THAT THE POOR DON'T... By Oluwatosin Samuels

In the previous write-ups, I shared on the 4 major must have income sources for financial rest. However, in this piece, I'll love to share on how the wealthy approaches income versus how the poor does.

**Point of note: my definition of being wealthy or poor in this context is not a function of the money stored in bank or asset worth but the function of the state of the mind - mindset!

The first major distinction between the wealthy and the poor is that while one is satisfied with "source(s)" of income the other is scouting for "streams" of income. Sounds alike right? But they are actually not the same and I will explain with a story.

Dekunle and Debola are friends living in the same village where there's been no water for a while and to get water means walking about 15km to the nearest waterfall. Then one day, a very wealthy man in the village summoned the two friends and contracted them to fetch him water each day. On the agreement that the more water delivered, the more payment they get.

Alas, work started the next day and the energetic friends delivered the job after some hours. They were well paid and were very happy. Motivated by yesterday's result, the guys resumed earlier the next day and again, they were paid their wages. Days turned into weeks and into months, these friends kept working at the job.

Then one day, they both sat to eat after another long day of work when Debola raised a suggestion. He said, "Dekunle, I've been thinking up a better alternative to our fetching routine and I think it's worth working on." After swallowing the next ball of food, Dekunle replied, "OK, let's hear it"

Debola then suggested that instead of going to fetch water in buckets everyday, travelling long distances, why won't they just put together their savings and hire laborers to help construct a pipeline from the water source to the village.

Dekunle laughed scornfully at this idea proposed by his friend and like one picking out lumps from an improperly prepared "semolina", he started listing countless reasons why the plan would be a failed project and would never survive. Debola persuaded, explained and illustrated on and on but Dekunle refused to budge, citing how he has tried similar projects in the past and lost so much resources bla bla bla.

When they could not reach a consensus, Debola gave up, so he devised a personal plan.
